The walk from Wigan Pier to Southend Pier was the brainchild of Ian Denham. The idea came to him whilst thinking of a new way of raising money and awareness for a cause close to his heart.
Ian had already long been a fundraiser for Alzheimer's and had completed numerous events including the London Marathon in aid of fighting the disease.
The challenge of walking from the (technically non existent yet extremely well known) pier in Wigan to the longest pleasure pier in the world in Southend came to him a number of years ago. As a native of Southend, now based in Manchester; it seemed like the perfect challenge. The challenge caught the imagination of colleague and fellow Alzheimer's fund raiser Stuart. The pair had trained for and entered a number of 10k events and half marathons together but this was something bigger, something different, something that would take months of planning, weeks of training and days of trekking across the country.
